How to Rewrite Content Without Changing Its Meaning

Meaning changes often happen in small words, not dramatic errors. A rewrite can look polished while quietly changing 'can' to 'will,' 'some' to 'most,' or 'associated with' to 'causes.'

Protect facts first

Lock names, numbers, dates, quotations, model numbers, technical labels, and other details that should remain exact.

Watch qualifiers

Words such as may, can, often, sometimes, usually, rarely, and always express different levels of certainty or frequency.

Watch causation

Do not turn correlation into causation, possibility into certainty, or recommendation into requirement.

Preserve scope

A statement about one product, market, audience, or time period should not become a general claim.

Compare sentence pairs

For important material, review source and rewrite side by side. Ask what a reasonable reader would believe after reading each version.

Use tools as drafts

Automation can accelerate rewriting, but semantic review is a separate step. The higher the factual stakes, the more conservative the rewrite should be.
